The heads of the political parties contesting in the general elections cast their vote this morning.

The leader of the National Unity Party (UBP), Prime Minister Faiz Sucuoğlu, his wife and two daughters cast their votes at the Şehit Tuncer Primary school on Sunday morning.

Speaking to reporters afterwards, Sucuoğlu said that the process leading to the election passed in a calm and civilized atmosphere.

“This is what makes this country great. I would like to thank all party leaders and party members,” he said.

Sucuoğlu repeated that what the country currently needed was political stability as economic stability could only be achieved through the removal of political uncertainty.

He wished all the parties and the candidates success.

The leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Tufan Erhürman and his wife cast their votes at the Gönyeli Primary school.

He was accompanied by Gönyeli Mayor Ahmet Benli and party members.

Speaking to reporters, Erhürman expressed his belief that the people will reflect their political will to the ballots.

He pointed out that it had been a difficult election process due to the pandemic, but that people still showed up to vote, taking all necessary precautions.

“The election held today is an election for our future,” he said, pointing out that the culture of democracy and democratic practices were well established within Turkish Cypriot society.

The leader of the Peoples’ Party (HP) Kudret Özersay who spoke to reporters after casting his vote in Lefkoşa said, “I wish all the best for the country. I believe that the peoples’ political will be reflected through the elections.”

Democrat Party leader Fikri Ataoğlu who voted in Gazimağusa said that the process leading to the election had been held in great political maturity.

“We explained ourselves to our citizens and now it’s their turn to decide,” he said, wishing the country all the best.

“I would like to wish all my friends, my compatriots and political parties’ success,” the DP leader said.

The leader of the Rebirth Party Erhan Arıklı and his wife who cast their votes at the 9 Eylül (September) Primary School in Lefkoşa said that the timing of the elections was wrong both because of the cold weather and because of the pandemic.

He said that there were around 6000 people who were unable to vote because they tested positive for Covid-19 in the last week or so.

The leader of the Social Democratic Party Cemal Özyiğit who also voted at the 9 Eylük Primary School in Lefkoşa was accompanied by Lefkoşa Mayor Mehmet Harmancı.

Speaking to reporters, Özyiğit said that they had carried out an intense election campaign despite the pandemic.

“Our expectation is for the people to vote by exercising their free will and to make the right decision,” he said.

Communal Liberation Party-New Forces (TKP-YG) leader Mehmet Çakıcı who voted at the Şehit Hüseyin Ruso Secondary School in Lefkoşa said that the election was an opportunity to move forward.

The leader of the Independence Road Münür Rahvancıoğlu who voted in Alayköy said that he had cast his vote in the name of those working in the private sector and for those who could not defend their rights.

“Our struggle did not begin with the elections. We hope that it will only grow,” he told reporters after voting.
