Prime Minister Ünal Üstel said on Wednesday that the government’s priority was to create a sustainable economy that can stand on its own feet.

Speaking to reporters at Ercan airport upon his return from first official trip to Ankara after assuming office, Üstel highlighted the importance of acting in unity, solidarity and achieving a common understanding in addressing the country’s problems.

Stating that the steps that will be taken within the framework of the recently signed 2022 Financial and Economic Cooperation Protocol with Turkiye will help address the country’s structural problems, the prime minister said that the goal will to be raise welfare and a create an sustainable economy that will be attractive to investors.

“The whole country should mobilize, to work together in unity and solidarity to solve the problems through compromise,” he said.

Üstel also drew attention to the strong historic, cultural and social bonds that existed with Turkiye.

“Our visit to Ankara was for the sole purpose of raising the welfare, prosperity and happiness of the TRNC’s citizens. Turkiye has always been by our side and will continue to support us in every possible way. For that we are eternally grateful,” the premier said.

Üstel warned that the TRNC no longer had any time to lose in addressing its problems and that introducing sweeping reforms were an urgent necessity.

He added that he and his accompanying delegation had found the opportunity to discuss with their Turkish counterparts the steps that will be taken to introduce these reforms.

Üstel pointed out that Turkiye will be releasing ₺4.250bn in the coming days, ₺510m which will be allocated for defence purposes and tourism incentives.

He said that the remaining funds will be used for infrastructural projects such as the construction of new hospitals.

Prime Minister Üstel also said that increasing efficiency in public expenditures will be prioritised.

Also touching upon the issue of energy, Üstel reminded that two mobile power generators will be arriving from Turkiye in the near future.

He also said that plans to bring electricity to the TRNC via cable were also discussed during his meetings in Ankara.

Üstel completed his words by pointing out that a cooperation protocol had also been signed with the Turkish government for youth and sports.
