Wreaths were laid, a minute of silence was observed and the flags were raised to the national anthem.

The special book was signed by President Ersin Tatar, the Commander of the Cyprus Turkish Peace Forces Major General Sezai Öztürk and the Commander of the Cyprus Turkish Security Forces Major General Zorlu Topaloğlu.

This was followed by speeches delivered by President Ersin Tatar, the acting Mayor of Yenierenköy Küfi Tulga and the head of the Erenköy Freedom Fighters Association Mustafa Arıkan.

The ceremony came to an end with the laying of flowers on the tombs of the martyrs and the recital of prayers.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Ersin Tatar said that the Erenköy Resistance was equal to the Çanakkale War and was a source of inspiration for the 1974 Turkish Peace Operation.

“Turkish Cypriot existence on the island will continue forever, the prices paid, the sacrifices made, and the resistance put up can only lead to one thing, a two-state solution based on sovereign equality,” he said, adding that peace had arrived in Cyprus in 1974 and that the only thing missing today was an agreement between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots.

Tatar said that a settlement in Cyprus depended on developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, the geopolitical conjuncture, Türkiye’s rights in the Blue Homeland as well as the safeguarding of the Turkish Cypriot peoples’ sovereignty.

Around 500 young Turkish Cypriots studying in Türkiye or in the UK had rushed to defend the enclave village of Erenköy 58 years ago putting up an epic resistance against overwhelming Greek and Greek Cypriot forces who outnumbered and outgunned them.

The village was of strategic importance as it was where weapons and ammunition, used to resist Greek Cypriot attacks, arrived from Türkiye.

The defenders had put up a heroic resistance repelling the Greek Cypriot forces which aimed to take control of the area.
