Hurricane Ian, which was effective in Cuba and caused power cuts throughout the country, is expected to be effective in the US state of Florida on Wednesday. More than 2.5 million people in the state have been ordered to evacuate.

"It's time to evacuate. Get on the road," said Kevin Guthrie, Florida's director of emergency management, addressing residents in evacuation zones.

Traffic was paralyzed on highways and airline tickets were sold out today, as 2.5 million people in areas declared a state of emergency due to a hurricane expected to hit the southern parts of the Tampa region today moved towards the eastern and northern parts of the state.

Electronic ticketing systems have been suspended on Florida's major highways to avoid traffic congestion.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis warned of the potential for devastating flooding like Hurricane Harvey that hit the Houston area in 2017 and said a slow-moving storm could result in high flooding.

US President Joe Biden's visit to Florida, which was scheduled for September 27, was postponed due to the tropical storm.
