United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres spoke at the program held within the scope of the opening of the 53rd World Economic Forum (WEF), which was held in Davos this year.

Stating that he is happy to be in Davos once again, Guterres said that the theme of "Cooperation in a Fragmented World" determined by the WEF reveals the current dilemma in the world.

Guterres drew attention to the fact that the world is facing many crises and the recent economic crisis.

"Many regions of the world are facing recession. The whole world is facing a slowdown. We are seeing a rapidly increasing cost of living crisis with deepening inequalities affecting women and girls the most," said the UN Secretary-General. he said.

Guterres stated that there are problems in the supply chain and energy, interest rates have increased with inflation and debt levels have negatively affected vulnerable countries.

"Kovid-19 still continues to strain economies." Guterres stated that the world is not adequately prepared for possible future epidemics.

"Despite all that we have endured, we have not learned the impact of the epidemic on global public health. We are not ready for new outbreaks to come," Guterres said. used the phrases.

Drawing attention to the problems related to climate disaster, Guterres noted that a new climate-related horror story emerges every week.

"THIS CONSEQUENCES WILL BE DESTROYABLE"

Pointing out that greenhouse gas emissions are at record levels, Guterres said, "The commitment to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees is wasted. If no more measures are taken, we are heading towards an increase of 2.8 degrees. The consequences of this will be devastating, some parts of our planet will become uninhabitable. It's a death sentence for many. But it's no surprise, science has been explaining it for years." said.

Emphasizing that there are conflicts, violence and wars in the world, Guterres said, "Russia's invasion of Ukraine, in particular, does not only cause the indescribable pain of the Ukrainian people. This is also true in the fields of global food and energy, trade and supply chain, nuclear security and international law. It has profound global ramifications." he said.

Guterres stated that they are doing their best to facilitate the export of food and fertilizers, especially from Ukraine and Russia, but in the Russia-Ukraine War, they are far from a peace that is compatible with international law and the UN Convention.

Stating that they are far from acting together in solving global problems, Guterres stated that system-related inequalities increase social inequalities and that there is a morally bankrupt global financial system.

Pointing out that the current system consistently rejects debt relief and concessional financing to needy and vulnerable middle-income countries, Guterres pointed out that they need to overcome all these differences and re-establish trust.

Emphasizing the necessity of building a just global system with the reforms to be made, Guterres said, "Developing countries need access to finance to reduce poverty and hunger and advance the Sustainable Development Goals." he said.
