Erhürman: "I Believe the Turkish Cypriot People Will Make the Right Changes at the Right Time"
Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader Tufan Erhürman expressed concerns about existing deficiencies in governance both internally and externally, stating, "I believe the Turkish Cypriot people will demonstrate the will to make the right changes at the right time."
During a program on Cyprus Genç TV, Erhürman criticized the current governance, claiming there is a complete void in the context of the Cyprus issue and relations with the world. He emphasized that "governance areas have been left vacant," and management has devolved into daily interest relationships. "No area is being managed. This void must be filled. We will fill this void," he asserted.
"THE VOICE OF TURKISH CYPRIOTS WAS HEARD IN NEW YORK"
Regarding his recent trip to New York, Erhürman noted that the CTP has been a member of the Socialist International since 2014 and occasionally attends its meetings. He anticipated significant developments regarding the Cyprus issue before his trip. He explained that the Socialist International meeting's focus on "The Architecture of Peace Processes," held alongside the UN General Assembly, prompted their participation.
Erhürman highlighted the productive discussions he had with various officials in New York, including the Russian Federation's UN Deputy Permanent Representative, Ambassador Anna Evstigneeva, and others from the EU and UN. He emphasized that the main topic of all discussions was "the Cyprus issue and developments in the region."
"I DO NOT TAKE THE 'PARALLEL STRUCTURE' COMMENT SERIOUSLY"
Responding to President Ersin Tatar's comments at the UBP congress about the existence of a "parallel structure," Erhürman said, "I have not responded until now. I’m sorry. I do not take it seriously. The CHP also participated in this meeting and was there with a large team. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan did not call Mr. Özgür Özel a parallel structure. We didn’t go secretly; we made it clear what we would say. There is no such jargon as 'parallel structure' here. I didn’t want to respond because I don’t take it seriously. Discussing these issues does not lead us to a meaningful place. We want to work."
"DIALOGUE IS ALWAYS GOOD"
Erhürman expressed limited expectations from the informal meeting scheduled for mid-October, saying, "Dialogue is always good. Any kind of dialogue is positive, but I do not have high expectations." He noted that the resumption of official negotiations is not subjective, stressing the need for "mathematical certainty" and recalling UN Security Council resolutions. He reiterated that a solution for Cyprus should be a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation based on political equality.
"MANAGEMENT HAS TURNED INTO DAILY INTEREST RELATIONSHIPS"
He commented, "You may not like it, but if the Secretary-General is going to set up a negotiation table, he cannot do so in another context unless these decisions change." He pointed out that contrary statements imply that "stagnation is a solution," adding, "The UN begins with ‘the current situation in Cyprus is not sustainable.’ It says the same to the south. The entire situation on the island is deemed unsustainable."
Erhürman noted that no one feels happy or hopeful about developments either domestically or internationally. "We must show and change our existential reflex," he stated, emphasizing the existing void in governance areas. "I believe the Turkish Cypriot people will show the will to make the right changes at the right time," he concluded.
