The world-famous cheese of Cyprus has been registered geographically by the European Union as a product unique to Cyprus.

Although this decision seems like a positive step for hellim producers, the decision regarding the inspection mechanism to be established caused controversy.

The European Union decided that my hellim production would be inspected by a mechanism to be determined by the Greek Cypriot Ministry of Agriculture.

"DECISION CANNOT BE ACCEPTED"

The decision came with a reaction from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu.

Foreign Minister Tahsin Ertuğruloğlu said that the European Union has once again ignored the Turkish Cypriot side.

"This attitude leaves Turkish Cypriot hellim producers at the mercy of the Greek Cypriot side," he said.

Stating that the decision was unacceptable, Ertuğruloğlu pointed out that a mechanism should be established where Turkish Cypriot producers can also be directly involved in the process.
