A- A A+

Having completed their world tour and anchored in Girne Marina, Zehra and Hasan Şirin couple told Cyprus Post about their experiences, including escaping from pirates along the way.

MORE THAN 30 YEARS OF WORK AND THEN BLUE LIFE...
The Şirin couple, who stated that they met sailing in 2009 after leaving behind their working life of more than 30 years, said that they decided to travel the world after 5-6 years after spending time in the Aegean and Mediterranean bays for a while.
In the meantime, the Şirin couple cannot fail to emphasize that their dog Carlos, who accompanies them throughout their journey, is the most important source of motivation in this process...

COMPLETE THE WORLD TOUR AND THROUGH ANCHOR IN KYRENIA
Expressing that they felt that the vast routes were calling for them once they were obsessed with the sea, Hasan Şirin said that they had been on the road for 7 years, not counting the pandemic break, and that they had now arrived in Cyprus after completing their world tour.

“WE KNOW EACH OTHER BETTER”
Stating that they realized that they could not spare time for their own life during their marriage during busy processes such as business and social life, the Şirin couple emphasized that they got to know each other better during their overseas trips, as well as new discoveries and new adventures.

ADVICE TO YOUTH... "DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME"
After they set their minds on starting their overseas journeys, the Şirin couple, who first finished books from many sources on maritime, pointed out that they acquired the main information on the way and advised the young people to take a step without wasting time.
Of course, it was not easy for them to travel all over the world by boat...
The Şirin couple, who also warned that not every route is safe, told their story of meeting the pirates to Cyprus Post...

ESCAPE FROM THE PIRATES!
The 'pirates' that many of us have seen today from the movie 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and that, according to some sources, are completely over except for the regions where the war zones were experienced, were able to find a place in the memories of both travelers.
Stating that the precautions that can be taken for the danger of pirate attack, especially on the routes off the African continent, are to be constantly careful and follow the security line, Hasan Şirin explained how they got rid of the pirate attack as follows:
“There is a ship route between Somalia and Yemen. This is a recommended route. On this reciprocating road, there is an area of 2 miles left to boats like us.
This road covers an area of 500-600 miles, so it may not be possible for the security forces in the region to protect you at any time.
In general, the attacks can happen after dark or towards the morning, it is recommended to watch the lanes in question in these time zones, but our speed did not allow us to cross that road overnight.

A 'FISHING BOAT' OUTSIDE OF NORMAL NATURAL ON RADAR...
In the evening, we saw a vehicle like a fishing boat on our radar, crossing the aforementioned lane and making a diagonal course towards us. Since the ships usually go in convoys in that region, we checked from the radar, there is no other ship.
At first we thought of it like a fishing boat, but we noticed that it was cruising parallel to our speed, we saw that it was driving diagonally towards us. We made several calls, but no one responded as there were no ships near us. Our aim was to act as a deterrent.
