Turkish Vice-President Fuat Oktay stressed on Wednesday that the European Union (EU) must stop ignoring the Turkish people, register the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriots, and fulfil the commitments it made to the Turkish Cypriot people in 2004.

Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay made evaluations to the Anadolu Agency correspondent regarding the European Parliament’s (EP) 2021 report on Türkiye, which was prepared and accepted.

Oktay said, “The shallow and visionless statements of the EP regarding the Cyprus issue in the 2021 Türkiye report is new proof that the EP has acted as the spokesperson of the Greek Cypriot Administration (GCA). If the EU and the EP want to contribute to the solution of the Cyprus issue; it must stop ignoring the Turkish Cypriot people, register the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriots, and fulfil the commitments it made to the Turkish Cypriot people in 2004.”

Pointing out that there are two separate peoples and states in Cyprus, Oktay said, “a federation model that the Greek Cypriots rejected for nearly 50 years, with distracting tactics, in 2004 and 2017, will not be negotiated for another 50 years. This book is now closed.”

In the EP’s report on Türkiye, it was stated that the Cyprus negotiations were expected to restart and the Turkish side to abandon the two-state solution proposal.
