In response to the fiction created by Anastasiades that the negotiation process was interrupted and would resume from where it left off, Tatar wrote that the grounds for a federation had been exhausted and that the acquired sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot People needed to be confirmed in order for a new official process to begin.

According to a statement made by the Presidency’s Press and Public Relations Bureau, President Ersin Tatar sent a reply letter to the Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiades on 20th of June 2022.

In the written statement, it was noted that in the letter written by President Tatar he responded to both the Greek Cypriot leader’s statements about a possible new official process and to his so-called confidence-building measures, which have proven to be unsuccessful time and again.

In the statement, President Tatar stated that the negotiations would not restart from where they had ended and that the grounds for a federal solution had been exhausted.

Tatar also stated that the acquired sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot People must be confirmed in order for a new official process to begin.

“President Tatar emphasized that the reason why the Cyprus issue has remained unsolved for 59 years is the denial of the vested rights of Turkish Cypriots, and underlined that the current reality necessitates the Turkish Cypriot People to use these legitimate rights just like the Greek Cypriots.

Our President stated that for a just and lasting solution, the existing inequality between the two sides should be eliminated, and for this, our sovereign equality and equal international status should be confirmed” noted the statement.

Regarding the so-called proposals made by Anastasiades, President Tatar stated that these proposals have been constantly brought to the table in the past, and said that the only reason for their failure to succeed was the Greek Cypriot side’s goal of extending its authority to our country by violating our vested sovereignty.

Our President conveyed that the so-called proposals only serve the continuation of the status quo.

If the Greek Cypriot leader is sincere about building trust, he should give up the isolation policy that has been actively applied to the Turkish Cypriot people for decades, and underlined that this policy is the main reason for the lack of trust between the two sides.

Tatar also said that the Turkish Cypriot Side will present a comprehensive proposal on concrete cooperation areas between the two sides in the coming days.

“These proposals will consider the equality of the two sides, they will consist of elements that will work and benefit both sides and will allow them to benefit from the cooperation to be created” noted the statement and added that this would contribute to the peace and stability needed in the region.

The TRNC’s constructive cooperation proposals will be presented to the Greek Cypriot side in the shortest time possible.
