Tatar hails Erdoğan’s response to Anastasiades as ‘historic’

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told the Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades who requested a bilateral meeting during the recent NATO Summit in Madrid that he would be ready to meet with him in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

President Ersin Tatar, speaking to the Turkish SABAH daily newspaper, thanked the Turkish President Recep Erdoğan, describing his response as “historic.”

He pointed out that Ankara’s determined and strong stance on the Cyprus Issue, was of vital importance for both Türkiye’s and the TRNC’s rights in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The response given by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to the Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades during the recent NATO summit in Madrid for a face-to-face meeting made headlines.

Erdoğan had told Anastasiades he would be happy to meet with Anastasiades in the TRNC.

Speaking to SABAH, President Ersin Tatar said that Erdoğan’s response was of historic importance.

He said Erdoğan’s response translated to, “I will only meet with you as and when you recognize the TRNC.”

Tatar explained that both the TRNC and Türkiye were expressing at every opportunity that a two-state solution based on sovereign equality was the only acceptable model in Cyprus.

“We are extremely grateful to our motherland, the Republic of Türkiye and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for their support to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus,” he said.

Tatar added that Erdoğan’s response had boosted morale in the TRNC which was preparing to celebrate the 48th anniversary of the July 20, 1974 Turkish Peace Operation.

He pointed out that Ankara’s determined and strong stance on the Cyprus Issue, was of vital importance for Türkiye’s and the TRNC’s rights in the Eastern Mediterranean.
