Ecevit remembered on July 20 anniversary
Former Turkish Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit who had brought peace to Cyprus by giving the orders for the 20 July 1974 Turkish Peace Operation and who had played an important role in the Turkish Cypriots’ gaining their independence was remembered at a ceremony on Tuesday organized by the Sönmezler Society in the capital, Lefkoşa.
Speaking at the ceremony held in front of the Bülent Ecevit Monument in Lefkoşa, the Speaker of Parliament Zorlu Töre stressed that they will never compromise from the Turkish Cypriot people’s freedom and sovereignty.
Noting that the society organised a commemoration ceremony for Bülent Ecevit every year with the aim of carrying on the spirit of the Turkish Revolutionaries, he said this was a sacred duty of loyalty.
In his speech, Töre also referred to the struggle waged by the Turkish Cypriot people and the resistance shown by the Turkish Cypriot freedom fighters to maintain the existence of the Turkish Cypriot people until the peace operation.
Touching upon the Cyprus issue, the Parliamentary Speaker warned that claims made by the international community that the system of guarantees was outdated and no one recognized the KKTC was part of a game.
He said that what was important was the will of the Turkish Cypriot people and Türkiye.
“Our decision is in favour of freedom, sovereignty and the continuation of an independent KKTC. People sacrificed their lives for these lands. We will never make compromise on our independence and sovereignty” he stressed.
