President Tatar in his message reminded how 84 Turkish Cypriots taken prisoners from the villages of Taşkent, Terazi and Tatlısu had been brutally murdered by EOKA militiamen before being buried in mass graves.

He said those who were murdered had only one crime, being Turks.

Tatar pointed out that the pain of the families of those killed was still fresh despite the fact that 48 years had gone by since the atrocity took place.

“It is our duty to make sure our martyrs are not forgotten and our freedom, independence, sovereignty and state are all preserved, to hold tighter to our motherland. Our other duty is to pass onto future generations what happened in the past,” he said.

Tatar also said that the Greek Cypriot side’s attempts to transform Cyprus into a Greek island still continued.

He added that the Turkish Cypriot people owed their freedom and independence today to the sacrifices of the martyrs and to our motherland Türkiye.
