At the European Parliament (EP) General Assembly session held in Strasbourg, the draft law aiming to standardize different charging ports of various electronic devices such as USB-C, Micro USB and Lightning and to reduce electronic waste was discussed.

MEPs approved the bill, which will bring uniform charging to smartphones, with 602 "yes" and 13 "no" votes.

By law, USB-C will be the new standard charging port for portable electronics.

By the end of 2024, all new smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, headsets, portable video game consoles, speakers and keyboards will have USB-C charging ports.

Thus, a single charger can be used in various electronic devices.

Consumers won't have to buy cables and chargers for every new device.

Existing cables and chargers can be used in various devices.

The fast charging systems of the devices will also be harmonized.

The regulation will expand to laptops in the spring of 2026.

With this application, it is aimed to reduce electronic waste.

After the law is officially approved by the European Council, it will enter into force by being published in the EU Official Journal.
