Famous Colombian pop star Shakira stated that the case in which she was accused of tax evasion in Spain was a "smear campaign" against her.

According to documents obtained by TMZ, Shakira, 45, accuses Spanish judges of "violating her privacy" by conducting the case so publicly that she never thought she might be innocent.

In September, Spanish judges ruled that Shakira should be prosecuted for alleged tax evasion amounting to 14.5 million euros.

In the indictment, it was claimed that although Shakira lived in Spain from 2012 to 2014, she avoided paying taxes by showing her residence elsewhere.

Spanish law requires those who stay in the country for more than 183 days in a year to pay taxes.

The court has uncovered a document showing that the pop star, who has been with Spanish football player Gerard Piqué since 2011, bought a house in Barcelona in 2012.

His lawyers argue that until 2014, Shakira earned most of her income from international tours and spent long periods outside of Spain.

The pop star, who officially moved to Spain in 2015, states that he has paid 17,2 million euros in taxes and has no debt so far.

Shakira, who stated that she was confident that she would prove her innocence in the case, rejected the court's offer of reconciliation.

The date of the case, in which the pop star will be tried on 6 separate tax charges, with 8 years in prison and a fine of 23.8 million euros, has not yet been determined.

Piqué, with whom Shakira ended their 11-year relationship in the past months, was also previously fined 2.1 million euros for tax evasion in another case.
