At least 31 people died from fake drinking in eastern India, 20 people were hospitalized.

In the Saran district of the Bihar state of India, three people were detained in three villages where the production, sale and consumption of alcohol is prohibited, for allegedly selling alcoholic beverages.

According to the reports in the Indian media, authorities stated that 31 people who consumed fake alcohol died, and a few of the 20 people who were hospitalized lost their eyesight.

"Selling and consuming alcohol" has been banned in the state of Bihar since 2016.

In July, 39 people died in the state of Gujarat due to counterfeit drinking. In 2019, 133 people in the state of Assam and 80 people in the state of Uttar Pradesh died from fake alcohol in the country. In the Indian state of Punjab, 86 people died in August 2020 due to counterfeit drinking.
