Healthcare workers in Northern Cyprus go on strike to protest against violence
The Cyprus Turkish Nurses and Midwives Association (KTHES) and the Cyprus Turkish Medical Association (Tıp-İş) went on strike today to protest against the recent stabbing of Dr. Sadrettin Tuğcu in Famagusta on May 6th.
Under the slogan "No service if there is violence," the two unions are striking in all hospitals, health centers, and clinics across the country, except for certain services, between 09.00-13.00. They will also gather in front of the Ministry of Health at 10.00 and march towards the Parliament.
The Cyprus Turkish Medical Association, Nurses and Midwives Association, and the Cyprus Turkish Pharmacists Association are also supporting the protest.
The two unions have been drawing attention to the increasing violence in the healthcare sector for a long time. Following the recent assault of nurses in an ambulance and the stabbing of a doctor, KTHES and Tıp-İş decided to go on strike.
In a joint statement made yesterday by KTHES President İbrahim Özgöçmen and Tıp-İş President Şükrü Onbaşı, it was announced that the unions will be on strike between 09.00-13.00 today across Northern Cyprus.
The statement noted that the strike will affect all units except for emergency services, dialysis services, intensive care units, and emergency surgeries in hospitals, and 112 ambulance services in health centers. "No service if there is violence" is the slogan of the protest against the increasing incidents of violence against healthcare workers.
All citizens and civil society organizations who wish to contribute to the protest are invited to join the gathering in front of the Parliament at 11.00.
