Traffic accidents and the need for deterrent measures: Expert calls for action

The President of the Traffic Accident Prevention Association, Mehmet Zeki Avcı, has spoken to Kıbrıs Postası about the alarming rise in traffic accidents in the past year that has led to serious loss of life. Avcı warns that the problem is becoming increasingly unmanageable with accidents occurring in a predictably catastrophic manner.

He points out that drivers are often caught driving while heavily intoxicated, at eight times the legally permissible limit, yet the penalties have not been deterrent enough. In fact, the absence of stricter enforcement of laws and penalties can be seen as tacitly encouraging reckless behavior. As Avcı puts it, "Someone who drives with a 400-promille blood alcohol level does not fear the fine he will receive."

While the punishment for such violations is only a 3-month suspension of driving licenses, Avcı called for the impoundment of the vehicles of offenders, citing them as a necessary additional deterrent.

Avcı advises that unless immediate measures are taken against traffic terrorism, more lives will be lost in the future. He suggests that announcements about these rules should be made for international visitors as well. He insists, "We must educate new arrivals to the country that penalties are a deterrent." As it stands, Avcı argues that language barriers and inadequate education contribute to many of the violations because the announcements are only made in Turkish and unfamiliar rules put some drivers at risk.
