According to the union, the growing disparity between the minimum wage and the food poverty line is leaving those on minimum wage in a state of perpetual hunger. The statement also calls for swift action by the Minimum Wage Determination Commission to create a new minimum wage standard.

To calculate the food poverty line figure for a family of four, the union incorporated a healthy nutrition model previously developed by the Bedside Treatment Institution of the Ministry of Health. They then used item prices for this model sent to the union by the Statistical Institute. The resulting calculation demonstrates that a monthly food expenditure of 14,454 TL is required for a family of four to achieve healthy, balanced, and adequate sustenance.

The statement by KTAMS also provides mandatory food expenditure amounts for different age groups and gender, as well as the inflation rates for the first five months of 2023 according to official statistics. The inflation rate for this period is reported to be 19.64%.
