Turkey's Natural Gas Imports Decreased by 6.9% in 2022; Natural Gas Exports Increased by 51.8%
According to the "2022 Natural Gas Market Sector Report" from the Energy Market Regulatory Authority of Turkey (EPDK), Turkey's total natural gas imports decreased by 6.9% to 54.66 billion cubic meters in 2022, compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, natural gas exports from Turkey in 2022 increased by 51.8% to 581.43 million cubic meters.
Of the total natural gas imports, pipeline gas accounted for 39.49 billion cubic meters, while the remaining 15.17 billion cubic meters came from liquefied natural gas (LNG). During the same period, Turkey imported natural gas from over 20 countries, with the highest imports coming from Russia, Iran, Azerbaijan, the United States, and Algeria.
Regarding natural gas exports, Bulgaria received the largest share with 254.86 million cubic meters exported, followed by Greece with 228.29 million cubic meters, Switzerland with 98.23 million cubic meters, and Serbia with 50,000 cubic meters. Exports were made in the form of pipeline gas to Bulgaria and Greece and LNG to Switzerland and Serbia.
In terms of natural gas production, Turkey's production decreased by 3.7% to 379.81 million cubic meters in 2022 compared to the previous year. Tekirdağ was the largest natural gas producer in Turkey during the period in question, followed by Kırklareli, Istanbul, and Düzce.
Finally, Turkey's natural gas consumption decreased by 10.5% to 53.52 billion cubic meters in 2022 compared to the previous year. The largest share of natural gas consumption was for residential use at 33.6%, followed by electricity production at 27.1%, industry at 25%, and other sectors accounting for the remaining share.
