Azerbaijani President's TRNC flag remark sparks controversy in South Cyprus
The statement made by the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, regarding the need for the flag of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to be flown at events in his country has been met with disapproval in South Cyprus. As Azerbaijan is not recognized by the Republic of Cyprus, diplomatic efforts have been made through EU and Organization of Turkic States (TDS) member countries.
According to Alithia's report, Nikos Christodulides, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, stated that they have made "strong efforts" within EU and TDS member countries regarding President Aliyev's statements about the TRNC flag, as they do not have diplomatic relations with Azerbaijan. Christodulides used the phrase "The EU has made strong efforts not only in this case but also in similar previous actions by the same country."
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus issued a written statement describing President Aliyev's statements as "disrespect for UN Security Council resolutions 541 (1983) and 550 (1984) concerning Cyprus."
The Ministry's Spokesperson, Theodoros Gotsis, also told the Cyprus News Agency, "Our Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reacted, and we are making various efforts at various levels within both the EU and the Organization of Turkic States to condemn this behavior, convey our strong disapproval to the Azerbaijani government, and prevent similar actions in the future."
Gotsis added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus "condemned" the participation of the Minister of Interior of the TRNC, Dursun Oğuz, in the 2nd Disaster and State of Emergency Management Meeting of the TDS held on September 7-8.
