2023 Nobel Peace Prize Awarded to Narges Mohammadi
The 2023 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi for her fight against women's oppression in her country.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced that Narges Mohammadi was awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her "struggle against the oppression of women in Iran and her efforts to promote human rights and freedom for all."
In their statement, the Norwegian Nobel Committee mentioned that the award was given to Mohammadi for her "courageous struggle for the rights of oppressed women in Iran." It emphasized her commitment to "human rights and freedoms for all."
The statement also highlighted the enormous personal sacrifices made by Mohammadi in her brave human rights activism. She has been detained 13 times in Iran, received five sentences of imprisonment, and has been sentenced to a total of 31 years.
The announcement described Mohammadi as a "woman, human rights advocate, and freedom fighter," stating:
"(The Committee) awards her this year's Nobel Peace Prize in order to honor her courageous struggle for human rights, freedom, and democracy in Iran. This year's Peace Prize is also awarded to hundreds of thousands of people who have demonstrated against the theocratic regime's discriminatory and oppressive policies targeting women in the previous year. The prize awarded to Mohammadi continues a longstanding tradition of honoring those who work for social justice, human rights, and democracy. These are important prerequisites for lasting peace."
The announcement also emphasized Mohammadi's fight against "systematic discrimination and oppression" of women, her advocacy for the right to live a dignified life, and her struggle for freedom of expression and the right to independence.
