Mona Juul's Name Mentioned for Special Envoy Position
Recent developments surrounding the appointment of the UN Secretary-General's special representative in Cyprus have sparked intense speculation. According to reports in the Cypriot press, Norway's Permanent Representative to the UN, Mona Juul, is now a name under consideration for this pivotal role.
Alithia newspaper reported on "Curtain Raiser for the Special Representative," stating that progress has been made informally regarding the special envoy, with the appearance of an agreement on everything. The newspaper also hinted that Mona Juul, Norway's Permanent Representative to the UN, is a potential candidate for the special envoy position.
The report pointed out that news of the appointment of a special envoy is typically denied by the Cypriot government two days after it surfaces, making the events of the past weekend peculiar and paradoxical. The news reports about the appointment were not denied by the government until the following day. The report called the situation "strange and paradoxical."
Citing information from both the UN and Turkish Cypriot sides, the newspaper highlighted that last week there was mention of Mona Juul's name, which had been confirmed by sources from both the Cypriot government and the UN. Diplomats had leaked information that "next week a special envoy will be appointed," which, as the report noted, was not coincidental and indicated that the choice of the name was not arbitrary.
Additionally, another report mentioned efforts behind the scenes to prevent the appointment of Mona Juul, who is a close working associate of former special representative Espen Barth Eide. However, the report noted that it remains unclear who opposed this appointment and the reasons behind such opposition.
Meanwhile, Cypriot Turkish media reported a shift in stance concerning the special envoy issue, suggesting that the denial by the Cypriot Greek side is being "monitored."
