Flooding in Somalia Leaves 500,000 Homeless

Heavy rainfall in Somalia has resulted in floods forcing 500,000 people to abandon their homes, according to the Somali National News Agency (SONNA). The rains have caused over 30 fatalities and submerged roads and numerous residences in the country's southern and central regions.

More than one million people are now at risk of disease outbreaks and food shortages due to the flooding. Officials are concerned that the death toll may rise.

Somalia and neighboring Kenya have experienced the most severe drought in recent years, coupled with extreme rainfall and flooding, making them among the countries most affected by climate change. Kenya had issued warnings to its citizens due to the excessive rainfall, and emergency declarations were made in some areas of Somalia following the floods.
