Two Suspects Detained in Case of Assisting Syrian Refugees' Entry to TRNC

Mücahit Özmen and Süleyman Rozymbayev, who were implicated in assisting 38 Syrian refugees in entering the country by van on the Yılmazköy-Alayköy road, appeared in court today.

Assistant Inspector Ömer Faruk Şengil presented the facts in court. The police stated that the suspects facilitated the entry of 38 refugees, including 11 children, on November 9, 2023, at around 19:30, using an unidentified Zodiac-type boat to reach the TRNC from a beach on the north side of the Roots Bar in Küçükerenköy.
The police explained that the refugees were apprehended within Mücahit Özmen's SJ 417 license plate Ford Transit vehicle on the Yılmazköy-Alayköy road and were arrested on the spot. The police reminded that the refugees had been brought to court last Friday, with some being sent to a student dormitory and others to prison.
The police stated that Mücahit Özmen and Süleyman Rozymbayev had been arrested, an investigation was initiated, and they had appeared in court, receiving a 3-day detention order. The police also indicated that during this period, both suspects voluntarily confessed to their crimes.
The police emphasized that human trafficking is an organized crime involving the participation of multiple individuals and pointed out that new suspects might emerge in relation to the case. They reported that mobile phones had been seized for examination to identify connections between the suspects.
The police added that the investigation into the suspects was ongoing, aiming to determine their associations and investigate who received the refugees and transported them to Yılmazköy. They requested an additional 8-day extension.
After evaluating the testimony, Judge Zehra Yalkut Bilgeç ordered the suspects to remain in detention for 8 more days.
