Cyprus Experiences Significant Increase in Illegal Migration
According to media reports in South Cyprus, 364 people have entered Cyprus illegally in the last three days.
Due to favorable weather conditions, seven boats carrying 364 people departed from Syria between December 30, 2023, and January 1, 2024, and reached Cyprus through illegal channels. During the same period, 28 people are reported to have crossed from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to Southern Cyprus, but no details were provided regarding these irregular crossings.
Fileleftheros highlighted that this marks one of the largest irregular migration waves by sea in recent times. It was reported that Cypriot authorities have received intelligence that more people will set out by sea from the coasts of Syria and Lebanon to reach Cyprus, prompting alarm among Southern Cypriot officials.
The news outlined that all seven boats were detected off Cape Greco. After arriving at Ayia Napa Marina or Golden Coast Fishing Harbor, the individuals were taken to the refugee camps "Purnara" and "Kokkinotrimithia."
The increasing number of individuals arriving in Southern Cyprus through irregular means in recent days has reportedly caused headaches for Cypriot authorities. The latest boat detected on January 1 was said to be carrying 138 illegal migrants, including 10 women and 21 children.
