544 Fires Reported in 2023 Causing 89 Million TL in Damages
The Fire Department has released its annual report, revealing that there were 544 reported fires in 2023, resulting in a total financial loss of 89 million 483 thousand 200 TL. Legal action has been initiated against 58 individuals in connection with these incidents.
The breakdown indicates that 148 fires occurred in Nicosia, 115 in Kyrenia, 101 in Famagusta, 37 in Morphou, 31 in Geçitkale, 29 in Çağlayan, 27 in İskele, 27 in Gemikonağı, 15 in Yeşilköy, 8 in Vadili, and 6 in Dipkarpaz.
Among the reasons behind these fires were determined to be arson, deliberate damage, burning for cleaning purposes, and unauthorized fires, leading to legal actions against 58 people.
Agricultural and Property Damages Detailed in the Report
The report further highlights that 161 field fires occurred in 2023, including 86 dry grass and rubbish fires, 31 garden fires, 17 stubble fires, 14 bale fires, and 13 crop fires. The fires resulted in the burning of 2,039 bales, 290 acres of crops, and 160 acres of stubble.
Causes of these fires included discarded cigarette butts, sparks from electrical wires, intentionally lit fires, sparks from welding and grinding machines, electrical issues, sunlight through glass, chemical reactions, and more.
In addition, 134 building fires were reported in 2023, with 82 residential and apartment fires, 45 workplace fires, 5 factory fires, 1 hotel fire, and 1 workshop fire. Causes ranged from electrical issues and unextinguished cigarette butts to forgotten oil on stovetops, fireplace incidents, and deliberate acts.
Vehicle fires numbered 129, with 81 occurring while in motion and 48 while parked. Causes included electrical system shorts, fuel leaks, arson, accidents, children playing with matches or lighters, gas leaks, coal not extinguished, and a portable charger exploding.
Diverse Range of Fire Incidents Covered in the Report
The report goes on to detail fires in various categories, such as 54 electrical fires, 9 landfill fires, 17 trash bin fires, 3 forest fires burning 612 acres, 4 LPG fires, 33 fires from miscellaneous causes like chimneys, marine vessels, and shelters, among others.
In total, 1,533 inspections were conducted, covering fire prevention measures, safety protocols, and special services like rescue operations, ad-hoc tasks, and more. The Fire Department remains committed to public safety and preventive measures in the upcoming year.
