Stefanos Stefanu, the General Secretary of AKEL (Progressive Party of Working People), argued that the stagnation in the Cyprus issue suited those planning partition. Speaking at the commemoration ceremony for Ilia and Nikos Tofaris, who were killed by Grivas militants in 1958, Stefanu expressed concern that the future of the country is at risk of partition.

Stefanu mentioned that during the last National Council meeting, they presented a comprehensive proposal on what the Greek Cypriot side needs to do to break the deadlock and restart negotiations in the face of this critical situation. He said, "We are not claiming that our proposals will automatically bring positive developments, but they can test Turkish intentions. If our proposals are accepted, as the Secretary-General said, we can overcome the last hurdle and achieve a solution that will end the Turkish occupation and reunite the country and the people."

According to Haravgi's report titled "The Future of Our Homeland and People is at Risk of Partition," Stefanu outlined the proposals they presented at the last National Council meeting:

  1. Unwavering commitment to a bicommunal, bizonal federation with political equality.
  2. Resumption of negotiations based on the Guterres framework, preserving the convergences reached in 2017.
  3. Evaluation of the energy element without undermining the sovereignty rights of the Republic of Cyprus and creating a positive agenda towards Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot community by announcing unilateral measures in the interest of Turkish Cypriots.
