UN Security Council to Discuss Current State of Cyprus Issue in Closed Session
It has been reported that the UN Security Council will discuss both the situation of the Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and the efforts to restart negotiations on the Cyprus issue in a closed session tomorrow. The closed session will include the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy on Cyprus and the Chief of Mission of UNFICYP, Colin Stewart.
Stewart, in his capacity as the Chief of Mission of UNFICYP, will brief the Security Council on the activities of the Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, and following this briefing, consultations among Security Council members will follow.
The next fifteen days are expected to witness two main developments regarding the Cyprus issue. The first is tomorrow's session where the Security Council will discuss the situation on the island in the context of the activities of the UN Peacekeeping Force. The focus will initially be on the views expressed by Security Council members, and later in the month, these views will be formalized into a decision to extend the mandate of UNFICYP, which will be approved by the Security Council.
The second development related to the Cyprus issue is the arrival of the Personal Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, to the island. Referring to President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Hristodulidis' statement that Holguin is expected to arrive after January 27, the newspaper noted that Holguin's visit during the period when the decision to extend UNFICYP's mandate is approved by the Security Council is not ruled out.
The report also highlighted President Hristodulidis' recent statement on confidence-building measures, indicating that he aims to use the issue of confidence-building measures as momentum for Holguin's visit.
