South Cyprus Reports 137 Homeless in the First Six Months of 2023
After the discovery of a deceased homeless Russian individual in an abandoned building in Southern Cyprus, the issue of homelessness has been brought into focus again. According to reports in the Greek Cypriot press, the exact number of homeless people in the country is unknown.
The newspapers cited figures presented to the Greek Cypriot Parliament last year, revealing that 137 homeless individuals were identified in the first six months of 2023. The news came following the discovery of the lifeless body of a 45-year-old homeless Russian woman in an abandoned building.
The press emphasized that the precise number of homeless individuals in the country is unknown, and the figures provided to the Greek Cypriot Parliament last year indicate that 137 homeless individuals were identified in the first six months of 2023.
Highlighting that these individuals were those who approached the state for assistance, the newspaper noted that out of the 137 individuals, 56 were Cypriots, while the others were citizens of EU and third countries.
The "Homeless Support and Integration Center" reportedly does not yet have the 2023 figures, but the numbers from 2022 revealed 190 "new cases of homelessness."
