Under the headline "First 14 Citizenship Granted to Turkish Cypriots - Children of Mixed Marriages with One Turkish Cypriot Parent" Politis newspaper extensively covered the news on its front and inside pages, stating that the Ministry of Interior had taken the first step in granting citizenship to children born of mixed marriages with Turkish Cypriots and had also established citizenship criteria.

The newspaper mentioned that for the first time in history, three Turkish Cypriots submitted a complaint petition to the UN in Geneva, claiming they were denied "Republic of Cyprus" citizenship, while at the same time, the Greek Cypriot government began granting citizenship to children born of mixed marriages.

NEW CRITERIA ESTABLISHED

The newspaper emphasized that the criteria for Turkish Cypriots to obtain "Republic of Cyprus" citizenship for children born of marriages with Turkish (or settled) or third-country nationals had been finalized. According to the information obtained by the newspaper, the new criteria included "the marriage taking place independently of the occupation, both parents living abroad, and getting married abroad and then returning to Cyprus (free or occupied areas)."

While the newspaper did not mention any other criteria, it noted that the situation became complex due to the right of a Turkish Cypriot to apply for "Cypriot citizenship" for a Turkish national (settled) spouse in marriages with a Turkish citizen who had settled in the TRNC.

The newspaper also indicated a safety valve for this situation, stating that Turkish nationals who married Turkish Cypriots and entered the island through illegal means could obtain "Republic of Cyprus" citizenship only after "applying for permanent residence in the Republic of Cyprus, and upon approval, residing continuously and legally in Southern Cyprus for seven years."

The newspaper mentioned that the new criteria set by the Ministry of Interior for granting citizenship to children born of mixed marriages would also apply to the children of Greek Cypriots who married foreigners residing "illegally in the territory of the Republic of Cyprus."

In the continuation of the news, the newspaper also reflected some statements made by Greek Cypriot lawyers and legal experts on the subject.
