In a social media statement, Özuslu emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that the discontinuation includes both weekly and biweekly magazines sent by the Turkuaz Distribution Company from Turkey. Additionally, the fate of monthly publications is slated to be determined in the coming month.

Özuslu outlined the repercussions of this decision, indicating that while there are currently no distribution issues with newspapers printed locally in Cyprus, certain Turkish newspapers originating from Istanbul and arriving on the island with a one-day delay have also been affected. The decision, he explained, stems from the rising operational costs and declining circulation numbers.

The closure of nearly half of the 203 distributors across Northern Cyprus is anticipated as a result of this development. Media News, the sole company responsible for newspaper and magazine distribution, is expected to undergo downsizing, particularly in rural and remote areas.

This abrupt halt in distribution, Özuslu cautioned, will lead to deprived access to newspapers and magazines for many individuals, resulting in financial losses for distributors dependent on this trade, potentially leading to closures. Moreover, the impact will extend to the Turkish Cypriot print media, with reduced access leading to further declines in circulation figures.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Özuslu pledged to closely monitor developments alongside media organizations, the distribution company, and press associations, stressing the need for immediate intervention to address the pressing challenges facing the press sector in Cyprus.
