The accident occurred on Bedrettin Demirel Avenue in Girne and resulted in one fatality and injuries to three others.

Police Sergeant Nadir Timuçin, presenting the findings of the incident in court, stated that on March 23, 2024, at around 5:00 PM, suspect Güniken lost control of his vehicle with license plate CS366 while attempting to overtake the vehicle with license plate YA147 at excessive speed and recklessness, causing a collision with the right wheel of the other vehicle.

As a result of the impact, the vehicle first hit the curb and then collided with a signboard and a tree on the sidewalk. Sergeant Timuçin explained that the collision also struck 22-year-old pedestrian Cihan Yüksel, along with Büşra Yavuz and Begüm Döşkaya, both 21 years old, who were walking on the sidewalk. Cihan Yüksel was pronounced dead at the scene, while Büşra Yavuz was transported to Dr. Akçiçek Hospital in Girne and later to Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital in critical condition, where she was admitted to the intensive care unit. Begüm Döşkaya is undergoing treatment in the surgical ward.

Regarding Güniken's involvement, Sergeant Timuçin mentioned that there was no alcohol detected in his breath test, but a blood sample was taken to determine the presence of drugs. Police investigations revealed that Güniken was seen driving recklessly, overtaking vehicles at high speed before the accident, as captured by surveillance camera footage at the scene. Mehtap Kutat, who was a passenger in the vehicle with Güniken, received treatment at Girne Akçiçek Hospital for a fractured ankle and was discharged after treatment.

The police further stated that Güniken was remanded for 3 days by the court initially, during which time they obtained 7 statements and secured 5 additional surveillance footage. Additional testimonies are anticipated, and analysis of the vehicle's speed is pending. The court, upon considering the evidence, ordered Güniken to remain in police custody for another 8 days for further investigation.
