Scholz: Turkey is Definitely an Important Strategic Partner
Germany Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that Turkey is "always a challenging but definitely important strategic partner." Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in a press conference following the European Union (EU) Leaders Summit held in the Belgian capital Brussels, noted that relations with Turkey were discussed at the summit, initiated by Germany.
Scholz expressed that they extensively discussed the improvement of connections, emphasizing, "Turkey is always a challenging but definitely important strategic partner. This is valid for many issues that we need to address together. Therefore, we need a forward-looking perspective. Good cooperation is in the interest of both sides."
He noted that this is particularly relevant for the development and modernization of the Customs Union and cooperation on migration issues, which are important for them.
Chancellor Scholz stressed the importance of addressing these issues, especially since the Commission has been given the authority to conduct these negotiations, including visa facilitation.
Scholz stated that he has been making efforts to initiate initiatives to improve developments regarding the Cyprus issue for a long time, emphasizing that they have called for the revival of mediation talks under the auspices of the United Nations (UN). He highlighted that the issue was deeply discussed, considering it an important step forward.
Scholz noted that Turkey and the Cyprus issue were extensively discussed, emphasizing the need for progress on these matters.
