Kipriyanu: AKEL was Contemplated Position in Referendum
A- A A+

Andros Kipriyanu highlighted the turbulent recent history of Cyprus, noting the various stages the relationship between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots has gone through.

Reminding that there are people living in harmony in both communities, Kipriyanu pointed out the events that worsened relations between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots in recent history. Referring to the efforts made for the solution of the Cyprus problem, Kipriyanu emphasized that the efforts in 2004, where separate referendums were held in both communities, and the efforts in 2017 at Crans Montana were among the most important.

Kipriyanu stated that during the 2004 period, the question of which position to support in the referendum deeply concerned AKEL, saying, "I believe that responsible and correct thinking individuals or parties should have a similar attitude." Describing that period as one where there were concerns about the future of Cyprus and our people due to the unacceptable issues and weaknesses in the Plan accepted by the Greek Cypriots, Kipriyanu blamed Turkey's uncompromising attitude as the culprit.

Kipriyanu also mentioned that the then Greek Cypriot leader, Tasos Papadopoulos, failed to show the necessary determination. Speaking about the current period, Kipriyanu emphasized the need for collective efforts and collaboration to persuade the leaders of both communities, as well as Greece and especially Turkey, and to convince the international community to help.

Kipriyanu warned against considering partition as the end of the road for Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, suggesting instead that it would be the beginning of new sorrows and disasters.
