TRNC Poverty Line Reaches 58,986 TL: Ahmet Serdaroğlu

Ahmet Serdaroğlu, President of Hür-İş (Free Workers) Union, stated in his speech at the Minimum Wage Determination Commission that "the poverty line in the TRNC is currently 58,986 TL." The Minimum Wage Determination Commission convened today to determine the second minimum wage of 2024.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Labor and Social Security Meeting Hall, was attended by Minister of Labor and Social Security Sadık Gardiyanoğlu, Ahmet Serdaroğlu representing the worker side from the Hür-İş Labor Unions Federation, and Cengiz Alp representing the employer side from the Cyprus Turkish Employers' Union.

Ahmet Serdaroğlu suggested that the minimum wage could be determined today with an additional welfare share based on the cost of living.

"POVERTY LINE IS 58,986 TL"

In his speech representing the workers' side, Ahmet Serdaroğlu, President of the Hür İşçi Sendikaları Federasyonu (Hür-İş), referred to the research conducted by the union and announced that they have determined the poverty line in the TRNC as 58,986 TL.

Serdaroğlu mentioned that the poverty line increased by 2,000 TL ten days after the day when the hunger line was determined, attributing this increase to lack of supervision.

Emphasizing the need to transition to collective bargaining agreements in the private sector and to prevent informality, Serdaroğlu stated that due to lack of inspection, especially suppliers increased their prices immediately after the announcement of the re-determination of the minimum wage.

Serdaroğlu suggested that the minimum wage could be determined today with an additional welfare share based on the cost of living.
