Claims that Holguin Exhausted Resources and is Preparing for a 5-Party Conference

It is alleged that Maria Angela Holguin, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Cyprus, has exhausted her resources in efforts to overcome the deadlock in the Cyprus issue and is making attempts to convene an unofficial 5-party conference with the participation of guarantor countries.

The Alithia newspaper, under the headlines "Initiative for an Unofficial Five-Party Conference - Holguin's Desperate Efforts to Overcome the Deadlock - Tatar Rejected the Trio but Did Not Mention the Five," devoted extensive coverage to the claim in its headlines and inside pages.

According to the newspaper, Holguin's room for maneuver in her desperate efforts to find common ground between the parties has greatly diminished. It claimed that during her visits to EU countries and Moscow, she raised the possibility of holding an unofficial five-party conference similar to the one held in Geneva in April 2021.

During her discussions, the possibility of convening an unofficial five-party conference with the participation of guarantor countries was raised, but there was no information regarding Holguin's contacts with Turkey, the newspaper claimed. It also alleged that during his meeting with Holguin, President Ersin Tatar rejected the trio meeting but did not reject the possibility of a trio meeting under the auspices of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The report also highlighted that Tatar made no statement regarding the five-party conference issue.

The newspaper suggested that the issue of a five-party conference would be discussed during Holguin's meetings with the leaders on Monday, referring to the statements made by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, yesterday.

"Cannot Understand Someone Not Wanting to Meet"

According to the report, in his statement yesterday regarding Tatar's rejection of the trio meeting, Anastasiades said, "I cannot understand someone not wanting to meet just for the sake of meeting."

Stating that he responded positively to Holguin's invitation and that efforts are ongoing, Anastasiades said, "Let diplomacy do its work. If we do not meet, how will we understand whether there is a possibility of solving the Cyprus problem?"

Expected Miçotakis-Erdoğan Meeting

The newspaper reported that while all these developments were ongoing, the attention of the Greek Cypriot side turned to the meeting between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The newspaper reported that Hristodulidis had a telephone conversation with Mitsotakis on Wednesday night, informing him of the latest developments. It also reported that Greek Government Spokesman Yannis Antoniou said in a statement that the Cyprus problem would also be on the agenda of the Mitsotakis-Erdogan meeting.

Antoniou said they attach great importance to the said meeting and aim to use EU-Turkey relations as a tool to establish the conditions for the solution of the Cyprus problem. He emphasized that as long as Holguin continues her contacts, despite all the difficulties, they will wait for a green light from Turkey for action on the Cyprus problem.

Fileleftheros, on the other hand, covered the issue with the headlines "Ready for a Trio Meeting - Reliant on the EU." The newspaper quoted Anastasiades as saying in his statement yesterday that he did not find Tatar's statements "positive" but did not want to comment on them.

Rumors about Turkey changing its stance on the Cyprus issue were also mentioned in the report, with the newspaper claiming that the Greek Cypriot Administration "seriously relies on the EU" regarding this issue. According to the report, Antoniou also touched on this issue in his statement yesterday, saying, "The EU is our greatest support in our efforts to achieve peace in our country."
