No Timeline for Resolving GPS Issues at Ercan Airport

Ercan Airport, managed by T&T and partly owned by Emrullah Turanlı, continues to face significant GPS system issues. During a recent incident, an Istanbul-Ercan flight was unable to land for half an hour due to a GPS malfunction. Civil Aviation Director Mustafa Sofi has indicated that there is no current timeline for resolving these issues, which are also affecting southern regions.

In an interview with Kıbrıs Postası, Sofi explained, “We have no forecast on when the GPS issues will be resolved from an air traffic perspective.” He noted an increase in signal disruptions in the region, attributing the GPS alerts primarily to signal jammers and regional conflicts.

Impact on Flight Safety

Sofi elaborated on the nature of the problem: "The GPS systems are being affected by signal jammers, causing them to display the aircraft’s location inaccurately. This discrepancy can result in the aircraft receiving erroneous 'do not land' warnings."

Regional and International Concern

He highlighted that this issue is not isolated to Ercan Airport. “The same problem is present in the south. It has increased recently,” Sofi said, emphasizing that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has issued warnings about this issue.

Passenger Safety and Communication

Sofi reassured that while the aircraft are in the correct position for landing, the GPS system’s false warnings can cause them to abort the landing and circle back, understandably alarming passengers. “The aircraft is actually in the right position, but as it descends, the GPS warning activates, causing panic when the plane has to ascend again.”

The ongoing GPS issues at Ercan Airport highlight the need for improved navigation system security and prompt attention to ensure passenger safety and confidence in air travel within the region.
