Nosheena Mobarik, a member of the House of Lords, submitted a question urging the UK government to lift trade and travel sanctions against the TRNC. In her question, she stated, "There is no reason to continue ignoring TRNC as a legitimate nation. The country is already divided along ethnic and religious lines." She added, "Our High Court has acknowledged that there is no legal obligation preventing us from doing so. In fact, I believe it is a good position for us to set ourselves apart from the crowd and lead others in recognizing TRNC."

Mobarik further mentioned, "At the very least, the government should acknowledge that our current ban on direct flights to TRNC has a negative impact on UK residents and businesses."

Previously, Baroness Mobarik had also brought forward a notable motion concerning TRNC, questioning whether British officials had visited memorials symbolizing genocide attempts against Turks in Cyprus.

Baroness Mobarik's latest motion is scheduled to be answered by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday, June 4, 2024.

"Ideal Conditions for Recognition"

Reacting to Mobarik’s motion, the Greek newspaper Pentapostagma commented, "Ankara's new goal is not only to establish two states or to share the resources in Cyprus's Exclusive Economic Zone. The new target is to find various institutions that will recognize the pseudo-state. Mr. Erdoğan considers the conditions for recognition to be ideal."

TRNC newspapers, on the other hand, remarked, "The Baroness’s initiative holds great significance for Turkish Cypriots."
