ODTÜ Northern Cyprus Students Protest Exorbitant Fee Increases
Students at the Middle East Technical University (METU) Northern Cyprus Campus have expressed strong opposition to the recent tuition and accommodation fee hikes, which exceed 150%. The students are protesting the significant increase in fees set for the 2024-2025 academic year.
The tuition fees have skyrocketed from 130,000 TL to 325,000 TL, a rise that far surpasses the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Wholesale Price Index (WPI) rates. Students argue that this substantial increase places an enormous financial burden on their families.
The students emphasize that this fee hike jeopardizes their right to education and makes it difficult for them to continue their academic pursuits. Amid ongoing economic hardships, they deem this price adjustment as unjust and are striving to bring attention to the issue and seek a reevaluation from the authorities.
Appealing for support and understanding, the students call on all stakeholders to help resolve the matter. They hope for a reconsideration of the fee structure to ensure that their education remains accessible and affordable.
