Aliyev: Azerbaijan Supports TRNC’s Full Membership in the Organization of Turkic States
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has expressed strong support for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to become a full member of the Organization of Turkic States.
He emphasized the historical and cultural ties of the TRNC with the Turkic world, stating, "As Azerbaijan, we support the TRNC's full membership in the Organization of Turkic States. This is very natural because, historically, the TRNC is part of the Turkic world. The Turks living there are our brothers."
Aliyev made these remarks during a meeting in Baku with several high-ranking officials, including Turkish Grand National Assembly Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş, Kazakh Parliament Speaker Yerlan Koshanov, Uzbek Senate Speaker Tanzila Narbayeva, Kyrgyz Parliament Speaker Nurlanbek Shakiev, TRNC Parliament Speaker Zorlu Töre, and Hungarian Parliament Deputy Speaker Marta Matrai.
According to a statement from the Azerbaijani Presidency, Aliyev highlighted Azerbaijan's priority in foreign policy to strengthen relations with Turkic states and enhance the unity of the Turkic world. He described the Turkic world as a large family with significant potential, covering a vast geographic area.
Aliyev elaborated on the strategic importance of the Turkic world, citing its transportation routes, energy resources, human capital, growing population, and favorable demographic situation as major strengths. He expressed his confidence in transforming this potential into a global power, saying, "Strengthening and unifying the Turkic world will turn the Organization of Turkic States into a major power center on a global scale."
He pointed out that while current global power centers are experiencing crises, the potential of the Turkic world continues to grow. Aliyev attributed this unity to common ethnic and cultural roots, asserting that these connections make the Turkic alliance stronger than any other.
Aliyev stressed the importance of coordinated efforts across all segments of society to strengthen the Turkic world further. He envisioned a future where global issues would be addressed in consultation with the Organization of Turkic States, emphasizing their commitment to cooperation and friendship rather than hostility.
On the Peace Process with Armenia
Addressing the peace process with Armenia, Aliyev criticized the Armenian constitution, which references territorial claims against Azerbaijan and includes ideological claims against Turkey. He highlighted the ongoing indoctrination of Armenian children to view Turks as enemies. Aliyev stated that unless Armenia amends its constitution, a peace agreement with Azerbaijan will be unattainable.
Aliyev also noted Azerbaijan's active diplomatic efforts to promote the TRNC’s observer membership in the Organization of Turkic States, reaffirming Azerbaijan's support for the TRNC's full membership. "Azerbaijan supports the TRNC's full membership in the Organization of Turkic States. This is very natural because, historically, the TRNC is part of the Turkic world. The Turks living there are our brothers," he reiterated.
