Mother Accused of Attempting to Strangle 9-Year-Old Son to Remain in Custody for 3 Days
In Nicosia, a mother accused of attempting to strangle her 9-year-old son will remain in custody for three days as part of the ongoing investigation. The mother, identified as N.Y., will undergo a medical evaluation at Barış Mental and Neurological Diseases Hospital to determine her criminal responsibility.
The incident, which has shocked the community, saw N.Y. appear in court yesterday following her arrest.
Police officer Emrah Turgal presented the findings of the investigation to the court. Turgal stated that the suspect, N.Y. (female, 41), is facing charges of "Attempted Premeditated Murder, Serious Assault, and Assault."
STRANGLED HER SON WITH A HOTEL BATHROBE BELT
According to Turgal, on June 9, 2024, at around 3:00 PM, in the Marmara region of Nicosia, N.Y. attempted to strangle her son A.Y. (male, 9) with a 150 cm long bathrobe belt obtained from a hotel where she had stayed the previous night. N.Y. allegedly planned the act due to her deteriorating psychological state.
The boy was transported to the emergency room at Nicosia Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital by a 112 emergency ambulance.
During the investigation, police collected evidence from the scene, including suspicious stains, a carpet with suspicious stains, and the bathrobe belt used by N.Y. to strangle her son.
On the same day, N.Y. was arrested under a warrant and voluntarily provided a statement, which requires verification.
CHILD DISCHARGED FROM HOSPITAL
The police reported that the child was discharged from the emergency room after receiving medical attention. The investigation is still in its early stages.
CRIMINAL RESPONSIBILITY TO BE DETERMINED
Officer Turgal stated that further statements need to be taken and that N.Y. must undergo a medical evaluation to determine her criminal responsibility at the time of the crime. He requested that N.Y. remain in police custody for three days for the sake of the investigation.
After considering the testimony, Judge Zehra Yalkut Bilgeç ordered N.Y. to remain in police custody for three days.
