Russia's Statement on Direct Flights to the TRNC: Not on Our Agenda
A Russian Foreign Ministry official has clarified that direct flights to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) are not currently on Russia's agenda, and the country's position on the Cyprus issue remains unchanged.
Yuri Pilipson, Director of the Fourth European Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that Russia does not plan to establish direct flights to Northern Cyprus.
In an interview with RIA Novosti, Pilipson explained, "As is well known, air connections with Northern Cyprus are provided solely by Turkey. This situation has not changed for a long time, and our stance on the Cyprus issue remains steady." He emphasized that "Russia, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, continues to adhere to Security Council Resolutions 541 (1983) and 550 (1984), as well as the 1944 International Civil Aviation Chicago Convention. We see no alternative to relying on international law."
Pilipson’s comments reaffirm Russia's commitment to the existing international legal framework regarding the Cyprus conflict, signaling no shift in policy towards the TRNC.
