Proposal to Abolish Mixed Voting: Early Elections Possible in June 2025

Republican Turkish Party (CTP) MP Fikri Toros has suggested that early elections could be held in June 2025, commenting on claims that Prime Minister Ünal Üstel called for early elections during a National Unity Party (UBP) Central Committee meeting. Toros also pointed out that the sudden proposal to abolish the mixed voting system strengthens the likelihood of early elections.

Speaking on Kıbrıs Postası TV’s “Gündem” program, hosted by Ulaş Barış, Toros, who also serves as CTP’s Foreign Relations Secretary, discussed the speculation surrounding early elections and ongoing efforts to amend the voting system.

"Government in an Unsustainable Position"

Toros said that, according to unverified claims, Üstel urged party members to prepare for early elections before the presidential election. He noted that early elections could become a topic of discussion within the next three months, recalling UBP’s party congress and the six-week parliamentary deadlock.

He argued that both intra-party divisions and tensions among coalition partners have rendered the government unsustainable. Emphasizing that CTP is ready for early elections, he predicted a politically turbulent period ahead.

Sudden Proposal to Abolish Mixed Voting

Toros revealed that UBP Secretary-General Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu submitted a proposal to the Parliamentary Committee on Legal and Political Affairs for amendments to the Election and Referendum Law. Among the proposed changes is the abolition of the mixed voting system.

He highlighted that the rushed nature of this proposal further strengthens the possibility of early elections. When asked about CTP’s stance on the matter, Toros stated that while the party has not yet taken an official position, there is a prevailing positive view within CTP regarding the abolition of mixed voting.

With the Parliamentary General Assembly postponed until March 25 due to the Geneva Summit, Toros predicted that the issue of early elections would likely be at the forefront once the assembly reconvenes.
