Gürcafer emphasized that while the Privatisation Law remains in force, signing a deal in violation of it “cannot be accepted under any circumstances.”

He said: “It is unacceptable for any of us to see an agreement being signed that contravenes the Privatisation Law while it is still in effect. Moreover, during a period when we are facing an unstable economic climate and are among those most affected by embargoes, the government should be directing emerging investment opportunities to local capital within the framework of equal opportunity. It should even be considering providing support to eliminate disadvantages in competing with international investors. Instead, the government’s decision to act by disregarding our local firms is indefensible.”

Gürcafer added that Turkish Cypriot capital today has the capacity both to make the necessary investments and to repay the outstanding debt owed to Türk Telekom. “Protecting and strengthening national capital, introducing regulations that facilitate its contribution to employment and the economy, and acting in a way that ensures public benefit based on these principles should be the fundamental duty of the government and all political actors,” he said.

Concluding his remarks, Gürcafer warned that the economy is the most vital tool sustaining the community’s existence, urging the government “to correct this mistake without delay.”
