Erhürman: France Rejects Greek Cypriot Extradition Request For Investor With Holdings In The TRNC
President Tufan Erhürman has announced that a French court has rejected a request by the Greek Cypriot administration to extradite a person with investments in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, ruling that European law does not apply, or remains suspended, within the territory of the TRNC.
In a statement shared on social media, Erhürman said the decision was taken within the framework of a European arrest warrant and followed a case that had been closely monitored for some time. He noted that the French court refused the extradition request on the grounds that European law is not applicable within the borders of the TRNC.
Erhürman underlined that property issues in Cyprus constitute one of the six core chapters of comprehensive settlement negotiations. He stressed that the Immovable Property Commission was established as an effective domestic legal remedy to assess property claims, until a final settlement is reached, in line with the European Convention on Human Rights.
Emphasising the broader political context, Erhürman said it was fundamentally wrong to attempt to place the burden of problems arising from the lack of a settlement on individual persons, or to treat the property issue — an integral part of the Cyprus problem — as if it stemmed from individuals’ personal actions or transactions.
“I hope that in the new period, such approaches, which negatively affect the climate needed for a solution, will be abandoned and replaced by confidence-building and solution-oriented policies,” Erhürman said.
