KIEF Files Objection Over Minimum Wage Increase

The Cyprus Workers and Labourers Trade Union Federation (KIEF) has submitted a formal objection to the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, arguing that the newly determined minimum wage increase falls below the six-month cost of living rate and therefore violates the Minimum Wages Law.

In a written petition signed by KIEF President Güven Bengihan, the federation stressed that the minimum wage hike remained under the cost of living (COL) adjustment. The statement recalled that, under the Minimum Wages Law, the minimum wage must be set at a level that enables workers and their families to meet the requirements of a humane standard of living, taking into account both the cost of living and the general economic situation.

KIEF pointed out that while the six-month cost of living rate stands at 21.66 per cent, the minimum wage was increased by only 18.39 per cent, a discrepancy the federation described as unlawful.

For this reason, KIEF’s objection petition submitted to the ministry calls for the minimum wage to be increased by at least the full cost of living rate.
