“Kangal Operation”: Large Quantity Of Drugs And Pills Seized, Four Suspects Remanded For Three Days
A large quantity of drugs and pills was seized during the “Kangal Operation” carried out at the Ledra Street Crossing, with four suspects arrested and remanded in custody for three days by court order.
Officers from the Narcotics and Smuggling Prevention Directorate conducted the operation, during which approximately 1.5 kilograms of a substance believed to be narcotics were seized, along with 465 pills suspected of containing drugs, around 20 grams of powder believed to be a narcotic substance, and 112 pills subject to green prescription regulations. The suspects — Jasmin Sulaiman, Qusai Emad Mohammad Afaneh, Maroua Razzouki and Faraj Mohammed Faraj Mohammed — were brought before the court.
Police officer Tutku Kızıltaç presented the facts to the court, stating that on 15 January 2026, the Narcotics Unit received intelligence that suspect Jasmin Sulaiman would be bringing a large quantity of drugs through the Ledra Street Crossing. Police units set up surveillance at the crossing the same day and identified the suspect at around 17.50 after she entered the north.
According to police testimony, a nylon bag carried by the suspect was searched and found to contain approximately 1.5 kilograms of a substance believed to be narcotics, 440 full and 25 half blue pills suspected of containing drugs, around 20 grams of blue powder believed to be a narcotic substance, and 112 pills subject to green prescription regulations. The items were taken as evidence and the suspect was arrested in the act.
Police said Sulaiman stated in her testimony that she had obtained the drugs from a person named Rami in the south and transported them to the north, where she was to hand them over to two individuals accompanied by a German shepherd dog. Following her guidance, police identified suspects Qusai Emad Mohammad Afaneh and Maroua Razzouki waiting with a dog in Nicosia.
Officers then searched the Nicosia residence shared by Afaneh, Razzouki and Faraj Mohammed Faraj Mohammed. During the search, approximately 400 milligrams of a substance believed to be narcotics were found in Mohammed’s bedroom. Police said Mohammed stated in his testimony that he had purchased two grams of the substance from an unknown individual in Nicosia for 2,000 Turkish lira and had consumed part of it.
Police further informed the court that, in addition to Jasmin Sulaiman, three other suspects had been arrested. In her statement, Sulaiman also claimed that on 10 January 2026 she had previously imported the same quantities of drugs, pills and powder into the north and delivered them to Faraj Mohammed Faraj Mohammed and Qusai Emad Mohammad Afaneh.
Noting that the investigation was at an early stage and that the seized substances would be sent for analysis, police requested an additional three days of detention for the suspects.
After evaluating the testimony, Judge Şevket Gazi ordered that all four suspects be remanded in custody for three days pending further investigation.
