Üstel: Politicisation Of Law Finds No Ground In International Courts

Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has said that the French Court of Cassation’s final rejection of an extradition request by the Greek Cypriot Administration clearly demonstrates that attempts based on the politicisation of law and abuse of jurisdiction have found no ground before international judicial bodies.

Üstel made the remarks in an assessment following the French Court of Cassation’s decision to definitively reject the extradition demand submitted by the Greek Cypriot Administration.

He stressed that the ruling clearly exposed the lack of legal basis for initiatives that seek to instrumentalise the law for political purposes and rely on overstepping jurisdictional authority.

Emphasising that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is a sovereign state with its own constitutional order, judicial system and competencies, Üstel said that all actions carried out within the borders of the TRNC are conducted within the framework of its own legal system.

Üstel also underlined that disregarding the reality of the Immovable Property Commission—recognised by the European Court of Human Rights as an effective domestic remedy—and attempting to achieve results through arrest and intimidation methods neither conforms with the law nor with good faith, adding that such initiatives are unacceptable.

The Prime Minister reiterated that the TRNC, in full coordination with Turkey, will continue to take determined political, legal and diplomatic steps to protect the rights of its citizens, investors and all those operating on a lawful basis in the country.
