Speaking after her meeting with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides, Holguin expressed regret that little progress had been made on confidence-building measures between the two sides since her previous visit to the island.
Holguin said she hoped to intensify efforts to achieve further progress on confidence-building measures and noted that she would meet Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman later in the day.
“This afternoon I will meet Mr Erhürman and I hope that progress can be made. So far, there has not been much progress,” she said.
Referring to the trilateral meeting planned for Wednesday with Erhürman and Christodoulides, Holguin said she hoped to discuss “the four points and the methodology that Mr Erhürman put forward a few months ago.”
“This is tomorrow’s topic and I hope progress will be achieved,” she added.
Holguin also warned that if no further progress is made in today’s and tomorrow’s meetings, it would be “very difficult” to convene a broader meeting on the Cyprus issue.
Asked whether a wider meeting involving the two sides on the island and the three guarantor powers — Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom — could be held next month, Holguin said this would depend on the progress achieved by the two leaders on confidence-building measures.
